Philip Ramos represents the 6th District in the New York State Assembly.This area includes Brentwood,Bay Shore, Central Islip,North Bay Shore,Islip,and Islandia.He was elected when this new District seat was created in 2002.

Ramos was born in the Bronx in 1956,the son of a corrections officer and a registered nurse.They taught him the value of hard work and helping in your community.In 1957,they became one of the first Hispanic families in Brentwood.
Philip has lived in this area ever since,currently residing in Central Islip.

After graduating from Brentwood High School in 1974,Philip became a therapy aide at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center,where he organized self-help groups for patients.He later became an Emergency Medical Technician,and received a special commendation for delivering a baby boy on the side of the Southern State Parkway.He later followed his father into law enforcement,becoming a Suffolk County police officer in 1979.He helped to foster better relations between the SCPD and the Latino community by arranging meetings between Latino merchants and his precinct commanders to solve problems.He also helped other Latino officers create the Suffolk County Police Hispanic Society to address community issues.

Ramos later joined the Narcotics Unit as an undercover officer.His experiences helped him teach parents and children about the dangers of drugs.He has also spoken at schools on the subject of police-minority relations.He was promoted to Detective in 1987 and assigned to his home community.He helped several major crimes,including the vicious assault of two day-laborers in Farmingville.In 1993,he was elected President of the Suffolk County Police Hispanic Society.He has also worked with the Long Island Guardians to create a mentoring program for Latino officers and Latino and African-American children.

Philip Ramos retired from the SCPD after 20 years and decided to run for the newly created New York State Assembly 6th District seat.He won a very competetive race in November 2002.He is married and the father of two children.
